    Nothing beats a wood stove, very cheap to run and gives off good heat for hours, check out Northerntool.com, they have a pretty good selection of not just woodstoves, but propane heaters and things like that.

    What about a woodstove? If you cut the wood for free and use a stovepipe to get the fumes out that can provide a lot of your heat at zero cost.

    If you have access to lots of wood then an outside wood stove shed pays for itself in about 3 years. They come in different sizes and look nice. It connects to your furnace and heats your water and is safer being outside your home. Insurance companies like it that way too. I think 3 cords of wood heats a 2200 square foot house for the winter(approx.) You can find these on the internet. I think the company is in Vermont,Conn. or New Hampshire.

    The cheapest forms of heating can be free, such as using windows to bring the sun’s rays in , another form is farm manures that have been dried(the Indians used these in their tee pees)wood is a great form especially if you can get it free from the springtime until fall(I find alot of mine in city parks and from neighbors trees )If you must use electric do so sparingly along with the other forms but if you live near trees wood is best bet.Set up several 55 gal barrels with bottom liners to reflect heat across rooms and use ceiling fans on low speed constant to keep heat circulating all winter, use what nature provides you with most be it sun or wood. Watch the animals in late summertime they will tell you what kind of a winter to expect especially the birds and squirrels.

    I agree w/ the others.. wood stove. However, be sure it’s installed correctly and is vented of course…. it’s a natural source of heat and will give off carbon monoxide.

    A better more efficient AND environmentally friendly idea is a pellet stove. It burns pellets of wood chips. virtually no left over ashes, (only a small pile) and a 40lb bag is very cheap and heats a 700 sq ft for 24 hrs. It’s like a 1/5 of the price.

    As for the electric heaters… please get at least one oil filled one, it’s much much safter and wont’ dry out as fast.

    also get a warm mist humidifier to get moisture back in the place. The warm mist will also aid in heating the place.
